WHERE IT STARTED. VETERANS WORK: THE REPORT

THE VETERANS WORK REPORT

The ‘Veterans Work’ report produced by Deloitte, the Officers’ Association and Forces in Mind Trust highlights some of the challenges faced by UK veterans entering employment, and the significant benefits organisations can realise by recruiting from the veteran talent pool. The Veterans Work report is part of Deloitte’s Five Million Futures programme which addresses the challenges faced by many people in the UK in accessing education, training and employment and how we overcome these barriers to unlock the full potential of groups of ‘hidden talent’ within our society.

WHAT IS VETERANS WORK?

Purpose of the project

There are an estimated 2.6 million military veterans in the UK – and 900,000 of them are estimated to be of working age. Approximately 14,500 veterans leave the Armed Forces each year and many of those will be looking for a second career. Veterans Work is a thought leadership series that shines a light on the considerable transferrable skills that veterans possess that are valuable to employers, particularly in the context of the future of work. Through the use of data, research and first hand experiences from employers, large and small, it encourages businesses to consider veterans as part of their hiring strategy.

Our aim is for Veterans Work to challenge employers to look beyond rigid hiring criteria and recognise the huge value that Service leavers can bring to business. Taking a slightly longer term view and harnessing veterans’ transferrable skills and behaviours, fills much needed skills gaps, positively impacts organisational culture and can pay great dividends; it’s no longer a nice to have, but something employers cannot afford to ignore.

What do we want?

Veterans Work challenges employers to look beyond rigid hiring criteria and recognise the value that Service leavers can bring to business. Taking a slightly longer term view and harnessing the transferrable skills of veterans can pay great dividends.

Veterans Work Collaborators

With the aim of encouraging UK business to consider employing ex-military personnel, Veterans Work is a collaboration across charity and business.

The Forces in Mind Trust aims to provide an evidence base that will influence and underpin policy making and service delivery in order to enable ex-Service personnel and their families to lead successful civilian lives.

5 Million Futures (5MF) is Deloitte’s North South Europe (NSE) social impact goal, aiming to help five million people get to where they want to be through access to education and employment.

The Officers’ Association (OA) supports serving and former officers transition to new careers outside of the military and works closely with employers to support the 'Military is Good for Business' agenda.
